Yes. I put the pipe in a vise and drilled a hole in the end and then connected the wire to the handle through the hole.
Yes, I use a cotton sleeve over the wire whether it's copper or silk. Here's where I got that on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/927024338/17mm-flat-cotton-tubular-braid?ref=yr_purchases Even though they are in the UK, I received it pretty quick to the US. Make sure you get undyed.
Re: sensitivity, indeed. I have had quite a variety of experiences with both materials. I started with just the basic Eeman copper circuit. Then, I added the spine circuit to that and then I switched to the Lindemann Universal circuit with copper and then silk. So fun to experiment with all of this!
