It's been a while since I last did one of these. The last couple years saw a lot of movement for me, as for many, and I didn't find enough of the space and calm that the readings deserve but I am happy to be able to do so now. So, if you have a question, I'll be happy to ask the tarot about it. That said, divination is like weather forecasting not a tablet of truth handed down from above. The conditions that divination taps into are in constant flux, the same as atmospheric pressure and the Moon. There might also be some profound readings, but by and large, given that most of us have ordinary lives, the readings have an ordinary tone. Only ask questions which you want to know the answers.

Thanks for stopping by!

If you wish to make a donation for the readings in order to provide a cup of something warm to the diviner in turn you can do so through Paypal by clicking the pentacle.

Even though questions about medical, legal or spiritual issues are okay: any actions taken from the information of the readings are entirely the responsibility of the querent. Divination is part of a spiritual practice and does not replace nor pretend to be professional legal or medical advice nor psychological counseling.

We live in a time of rapid change and uncertainty. The 50 year failure of the environmental movement has left us with a tangle of interconnected problems. Ecosystem destruction;  freakishly high levels of pollution of the land the water and the atmosphere; and resource depletion combine to create a looming crisis of epic proportions. We are faced with increasing political and economic instability and it’s clear that there will be no large scale co-ordinated efforts to address any of it.

This blog is about what we can do, as ordinary people in families and small groups, to create lives worth living; to build a future worth having; and to be a force for renewal and regeneration in our much depleted world. I hope to provide some possibilities based on our universal human strengths and the strategies that have allowed us to thrive in the past.

If you care about this planet; the future; and your own ability to make your way in these crazy times this blog is for you.

This blog is largely informed by my training and experience as a permaculture designer and teacher. Permaculture is a systematic approach to the design of human habitats. It is the most sophisticated practical approach to human ecology currently available. The guidelines it provides can be used for personal decision making just as effectively as they are for making design decisions.

The Prime Directive of Permaculture is self responsibility. Permaculture typically emphasizes food production partly because industrial agriculture is so enormously destructive and partly because food is the easiest of the top three human needs to provide for ourselves. This doesn’t mean we all have to be farmers or even gardeners. If your skills and inclinations lay elsewhere you can still use the following ideas and suggestions to find a place for your talents within the large scope of this project. It is much more important to internalize the idea of Self Responsibility than it is to manifest any particular aspect of it.

Thinking about ways to provide for ourselves and our families and reducing our reliance on unstable global supply systems may seem overwhelming but in a world fraught with chaotic international conflict the alternatives may be worse. Systems thinking and the tools that inform permaculture design can show you where to focus your attention; illuminate the outside influences that affect you; and inform your response to the challenges we all face.

The first tool I want to introduce is “zone mapping.” In systems design this is used to plan the placement of various elements within the system depending on how much care and attention they need or how much use they get. Anything that needs daily attention goes in zone 1. Herb gardens are placed near the kitchen door to give daily access to fresh herbs. Things that need less frequent attention go into zone 2. Zone 3 is for things that need only occasional attention or maintenance. Zone 4 are the areas you may only visit once or twice a year and require almost no maintenance. Wild-ish areas that contain hiking trails, foraging spots, and restoration projects fit here. Zone 5 is the wilderness. Real wilderness. Places people don’t go.

Using the same map and applying zone planning to your time and  attention and identifying your spheres of influence, it’s easy to see that what you do and how you live will have the most impact on your home and your daily workplace. Think of your daily routine as an infinite looped path. Anyone you interact with and any place you visit or spend time is your zone 1. It makes sense to focus most of your attention here where you have the most influence.

Zone 5 is probably international politics. The area where your personal influence drops to near zero. In between, zones 2, 3, and 4 your influence progressively diminishes and it makes sense to divide your energy, time, and attention proportionally. Zone 2 is your neighbourhood and your friends and family. Zone 3 is the larger community and Zone 4 may be the national political economic sphere. There will be times when any one of these zones needs more concentrated attention. However, spending all your time in Zone 4 and ignoring what’s going on in Zones 1 and 2 is not a good strategy for maintaining personal equilibrium.

The second tool is the sector map. In permaculture design this is used to determine the source of the outside influences flowing through the site. Seasonal wind directions and sun angles; slope and water flow (fire and flood sectors); and views to preserve or to block. These are things beyond your control that have an impact on your life and your choices. This includes material resources like income and food. It may include family influences or social pressure. Even ideas and social trends. Anything that is beyond your control and has an impact on how you live and your available options.

Using this tool in your life is more personal. Just as the outside influences  are site specific in a permaculture design, the outside influences flowing through your life will be specific to you. There will be commonalities. Some of these things will affect the people around you in similar ways. Some of them will be unique.

Giving careful thought to the things that flow into your “system” from the outside allows you to assess them individually and make decisions about your response. Is the flow intermittent or consistent? Is the impact dramatic or persistent? Are there features of your situation that limit or distract you? Are there influences you can make use of to make yourself stronger and more resilient? Are there things that weaken you or your position that can be remedied or amended? Are there better ways to respond to the various “flows” so you are not buffeted around or taken unawares?

The answers of course depend entirely on your situation and how much flexibility you have. The point is that even if there is nothing you can do about any of it right now, these tools give you a foundation for thinking about how to devote your time and attention to weathering the storms when they come through and enjoying the sun when it shines.

In New Age writings, the Dragons are believed to be from the Fourth and above Dimensions. They come to the Third and Fourth Dimensions to the Earth’s Dimensions to fulfill myriad functions. Since 2012, the Earth has been transitioning to the Fifth Dimension, with the Dragons supporting the Planet Earth during this time.

Fourth Dimension
Dragons at the Fourth Dimension delve into the deep dark vibrations (Note 1) that the higher beings of the Seventh Dimension cannot reach. These Dragons clear out the dark vibrations to bring forth harmony. As Elementals, they often befriend humans. In fact, these big-hearted Dragons are preparing humans for the Golden Age to come.

To support the collective shift of humankind (called Ascension) (Note 2), the Dragons of the Fourth Dimension anchor the higher energies. Moreover, they are pivotal guides for individuals during this transition. These Dragons enable humans to master the primordial forces of the Elements.

Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Dimensions
Dragons, at the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Dimensions, also prepare everyone for the new Golden Age to come. Working with the Archangels (Note 3), they transmute the Earth for Ascension to the Fifth Dimension. Meanwhile, these Dragons impart the knowledge and wisdom of the Star Nations (Note 4) to seekers.

Since they embody the refined energies of the Fifth Dimension, these Dragons have a luminous appearance, In fact, they appear as iridescent beings of plasmic light and sound. These Dragons, in particular, facilitate the transition of individuals to Higher Consciousness, besides elevating the energies of the planet. For humans, they integrate the Light Codes (Note 5) in their Light Bodies (Note 6) for Ascension.

Notes:

Note 1. In New Age beliefs, everything is made of vibration and frequency. Therefore, everything is energy. The Law of Vibration states “Nothing rests; everything moves, everything vibrates.”

Note 2. “Ascension” is defined as “the raising of the personal vibrational frequency to the Higher Self, which unifies with the Cosmic Force.” A person moves from having a Light Body to being a Light Being (Higher Self).

The Higher Self is the divine aspect of the self that exists beyond the individual’s ego.
There is a hierarchy of “souls” or “selves” in New Age theology. In the hierarchy, the highest is the Oversoul, the Universal Spirit that unifies all beings. It is the connective point between multiple Higher Selves. Second is the Higher Self. The next is the Spirit, the Divine Spark of Consciousness that connects the person to the Collective Consciousness. Finally, the Soul is the individual essence that incarnates into a physical body.

Note 3. In the New Age, Archangels are the masters of the subtler spheres, and will help to increase self-awareness.

Note 4. A tenet of New Age beliefs is that humanity has Ancestors from advanced higher-frequency civilizations from various stars. The best-known Star Nations are Andromeda, Arcturus, Lyra, Orion, Sirius and the Pleiades.

Note 5. In New Age beliefs, Codes are encoded energies that hold information to ignite a person’s DNA. These Codes contain programming for the person’s energetic systems (mind, body, and spirit). Thereby, allowing a person to become a Light Soul (to Ascend).

Note 6. According to various traditions, the Light Body is a multi-layered, energy-based system that surrounds the physical body. This body forms the vibrational density that connects people to the Divine Source and their Higher Selves. The astral, emotional, etheric, mental and rainbow bodies are aspects of the Light Body.

up to youIt's midnight and so it's time to launch a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism, and with certain exceptions noted below, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question or comment received after that point will not get an answer, and in fact will not be put through.  If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 341,928th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.3 of The Magic Monday FAQ here

Also:
I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.  And further:  I've decided that questions about getting goodies from spirits are also permanently off topic here. The point of occultism is to develop your own capacities, not to try to bully or wheedle other beings into doing things for you. I've discussed this in a post on my blog.

(The image? I've finished the sequence of my published books; while I decide what I want to do next, I have some memes to share.)

Buy Me A Coffee

Ko-Fi

I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use either of the links above to access my online tip jar; Buymeacoffee is good for small tips, Ko-Fi is better for larger ones. (I used to use PayPal but they developed an allergy to free speech, so I've developed an allergy to them.) If you're interested in political and economic astrology, or simply prefer to use a subscription service to support your favorite authors, you can find my Patreon page here and my SubscribeStar page here

Bookshop logoI've also had quite a few people over the years ask me where they should buy my books, and here's the answer. Bookshop.org is an alternative online bookstore that supports local bookstores and authors, which a certain gargantuan corporation doesn't, and I have a shop there, which you can check out here. Please consider patronizing it if you'd like to purchase any of my books online.

And don't forget to look up your Pangalactic New Age Soul Signature at CosmicOom.com.

With that said, have at it!

The case of the missing notifications

I keep forgetting to post about this: we've been troubleshooting the "missing notifications" problem for the past few days. (Well, I say "we", really I mean Mark and Robby; I'm just the amanuensis.) It's been one of those annoying loops of "find a logical explanation for what could be causing the problem, fix that thing, observe that the problem gets better for some people but doesn't go away completely, go back to step one and start again", sigh.

Mark is hauling out the heavy debugging ordinance to try to find the root cause. Once he's done building all the extra logging tools he needs, he'll comment to this entry. After he does, if you find a comment that should have gone to your inbox and sent an email notification but didn't, leave him a link to the comment that should have sent the notification, as long as the comment itself was made after Mark says he's collecting them. (I'd wait and post this after he gets the debug code in but I need to go to sleep and he's not sure how long it will take!)

We're sorry about the hassle! Irregular/sporadic issues like this are really hard to troubleshoot because it's impossible to know if they're fixed or if they're just not happening while you're looking. With luck, this will give us enough information to figure out the root cause for real this time.

At the Ninth and Tenth Dimensions, the “Light of Wisdom” reigns. The grand design of the Oversoul is revealed. At these planes, a profound shift in consciousness happens. The Tenth Dimension is the bridge to the Source Intelligences of the Eleventh Dimension.

Christ Consciousness (Note 6) and Divine Wisdom: “Soul Councils, Star Governance.” At this Dimension, the individual joins a collective such as the “Galactic Akashic Keepers” or other Soul Councils. They now operate with a full understanding of creation. This is realm of the Ascended Masters and Guardians of Star Gates. (Note 7)
.
Collective Oversoul and Universal Consciousness: “Source Templates, Creator Consciousness.” Most planets will ascend to this Dimension and join The Shekinah, the Tenth Dimension Universe of Love and Joy. Spirits at this Dimension have incarnated to aid the Earth. All individual souls from multiple realities converge into a unified consciousness. Since it develops the structure that exists at all levels, the Tenth Dimension is called the Template Plane.

Universal Consciousness: “Unity of All Polarity.” This is the Heartbeat of Creation, where sound is the designer and light the animator. All creation merges into a single, universal awareness. The characteristic of this Dimension is complete unity with all, timelessness, and infinite love. After remembering Itself, the Source Intelligence moves into the Infinite.

The Twelfth Dimension is the Eternal Plane of the Cosmic Source.

Source, All That Is (Note 8): “Source Embodiment.” This Dimension of Embodied Eternity integrates all into the fabric of “All That Is.” This is the Alpha and Omega, beyond form and thought – the cyclical nature of existence.

Beyond the Twelfth Dimension.

These Dimensions are known as the Higher Octaves, where cosmic orchestration, archangelic creation, the Source expresses itself.

The Thirteen, Fourteen, and Fifteen Dimensions are the Trans-Harmonic Universe (the Trinity of the Mother, Father, and Christed Son). The Thirteen Dimension is a cosmic threshold to the other Dimensions.

The remainder, from Sixteenth to Twenty-Seventh Dimensions, are the Oversoul Consciousness or the Collective Consciousness.

The Higher Dimensions are as follows:

Thirteenth: Christed Grid of Christ Consciousness. Fourteen: Archangelic Realms, Fifteenth: Seraphin and Source Architects,

Sixteenth through Eighteen: Multiverse Fields – the Councils of Light and Currents of Creation,

Nineteen through Twenty-First: Void and Womb, where destruction and creation merge, as well as Soul Collectives.

Twenty-Second through Twenty-Fourth: The Cosmic Library.

Twenty-Fifth through Twenty-Seventh: Aspects of the Source as Love.

Notes:

Note 6. The Christ Light is Source Love and Wisdom. It is stepped through the frequency bands of the Dimensions, since it is Twelfth Dimensional. The Christ Light shields people from the lower energies and heals them.

“Christ” extends beyond the traditional Christian meaning to be the state of eternal Cosmic Consciousness. Meanwhile, Jesus is the Bringer of Cosmic Love.

Note 7. Star Gates are resonance fields where time and space thin, allowing passage to other realities.

Note 8. “All That Is” is the New Age doctrine that “All is One, and One is All.” “All That Is” is the interconnection of the Spirit and Consciousness in all things.

Orion Has Landed

splashdownThose of you who know your way around 1970s prog rock may remember the Jethro Tull song "Orion," from the glorious album Stormwatch. I've got it playing right now on my stereo, as a little celebration of the successful completion of the Artemis II lunar flyby mission with the splashdown of the Orion space capsule with four intact astronauts on board. As regular readers will recall, I didn't expect the United States to manage this again during my lifetime; the fact that this far down the curve of economic and social decline, we could still manage a good imitation of the glory days of the Apollo program startled and pleased me.

It bears recalling that Artemis is in fact an imitation of the Apollo program. Single-use capsules atop disposable booster rockets were supposed to be as obsolete as the Model T Ford by now; the Space Shuttle was supposed to be the first of a whole sequence of reusable spacecraft that would make space travel as routine as taking a jet from New York to Paris. Yet here we are in 2026 with a slightly upgraded Apollo-style spacecraft, on top of a cobbled-together "Space Launch System" that's basically a reconfigured Space Shuttle booster system -- that was the only option once the Constellation booster program bogged down terminally in cost overruns and engineering problems.

StormwatchIn other words, the Orion capsule and the Artemis program generally is another successful demonstration of the power of retro technology. I don't recommend saying that too loudly just now, though!

Back in 2011, I posted one of the most widely read of my online essays, "An Elegy for the Age of Space":

https://archdruidmirror.blogspot.com/2017/06/an-elegy-for-age-of-space.html

As readers will notice, I didn't expect the International Space Station to have its lifespan prolonged for more than a decade past its original scheduled deorbiting. I did note that there would be efforts to keep pursuing the failed dream of infinite expansion into space. I remain as convinced as I was then that a meaningful response to the converging crises of our time would involve redirecting as many resources as possible away from high-tech daydreams and toward the transformations that will get us prepared for America's post-imperial and post-industrial future.

At this point, though, I see no reasonable chance that this approach will be taken by anyone outside of a few fringe subcultures. We're going to do this the hard way, and the capacity to copy the achievements of America's glory days, or even push past them a little at great cost, doesn't change that.

That said, I've lifted a glass already to the hard work of the NASA personnel and space-program subcontractors who made this happen, and the courage of four astronauts who put their lives on the line in what is, after all, a far from risk-free voyage.  I used to watch space launches on TV when I was a child, and it was something to see that happen again now that I'm in my sixties.

Finding Your Niche: Staying flexible

Most of what I have written and will write is about the general pattens of behaviour we can adopt to help us weather the storm of changes coming at us. However I’d like to take a moment (or two or three) to discuss how these strategies can be used by you the specific individual reading this.

The term “niche” is used culturally as well as biologically. It has a similar meaning but rather than referring to a whole species’ habitat and subsistence strategy, it refers to the individual and his or her spot in the human economic system. Humans as a species are generalist. There are many possible subsistence strategies for human groups just as there are a range of possibilities for individuals within the group.

The concept of an individual niche within the human social-economic system speaks to the value of specialization. Specialization and the division of labour within the group is an adaptation that has been so successful it is universal in human cultures and societies. The division of labour is often but not necessarily sex based.* The more important consideration, in small groups, is who has the skill or talent for the task.

In biological systems specialization works best in stable ecosystems. In periods of rapid change when the system is more chaotic being a generalists seems to be an advantage. This doesn’t mean rejecting specialization or the advantages of the division of labour. It does mean that being a specialist with a single income stream may not be the best strategy in these crazy times. Finding your niche may be about striking a balance.

At the very least you may want to think about how to diversify. This is an especially important consideration for those whose work is outside the economy of real goods and services. Those are the jobs that are most at risk of disappearing right now. Finding ways to branch out and expand your possibilities is a way of building personal resilience.

The world we in habit, the world that is coming, is very different from the world we were raised to expect. Being resilient means letting go of your expectations and accepting what is. Being resilient means having backup systems that can take at least some of the load if there is an abrupt shift.  Staying flexible, staying alert to other options, and paying attention to what is working for other people is vital.

Since the 1980’s economic “growth” has been largely an illusion based on the expansion of the F.I.R.E. sector, that is Finance, Insurance and Real Estate. Ultimately what counts as “growth” has been rich people playing with money to enrich themselves at our expense. The economy of real goods and services has been contracting fairly steadily.

Economic contraction is an ecological necessity. Our current consumption of energy and material resources is cannot be sustained. Earth Overshoot Day in Canada is calculated to be March 8.  (You can find the EOD for your country here: Earth Overshoot Day https://overshoot.footprintnetwork.org/newsroom/country-overshoot-days/)

March 8!! That means that achieving a truly sustainable steady state ecologically sound human society will involve reducing our use of material resources (which includes water and land**) to about 20% of what we are currently using. This sounds horrific but we aren’t talking about a sudden apocalyptic collapse. This is a long, slow, bumpy process and population is likely to decline as well.

Being supremely adaptable is a superpower that gives us lots of flexibility in how we approach work and livelihood. Using forethought and intention can make the difference between a constant bitter struggle and finding ways to thrive. It’s important to remember we are making a transition that will take several generations.

We cannot know what specific strategies or practices will be successful in the long term. Only the broad outlines of the near future are visible. This means there is no single right way to live or make a living. It also means, it is crucial that everyone finds and follows their own path. The dissensus model put forth by John Michael Greer (https://archdruidmirror.blogspot.com/2017/06/why-dissensus-matters.html) is critically important here.

Finding and following your own path is an ongoing process. Your talents and abilities will make your story unique. Your situation, skills, available resources, and the creative use you make of them will determine how it unfolds. Knowing yourself includes recognizing your limits too. You can’t do everything.

In the essays that follow the broad outlines of how we can use our inherent human strengths to build lives for ourselves while rebuilding our world will include many suggestions for your consideration. Not everything will be possible for you. Pick the low hanging fruit but think deeply about each suggestion. What would your life would be like if you could do more of these things?

Next: Finding Your Niche: Spheres of Influence

* In the first of Heather Heying’s excellent two part essay on competition (https://naturalselections.substack.com/p/competition1of2?r=83qgf) she reproduces a chart from Murdock & Provost’s 1973 paper “Factors in the division of labor by sex: A cross-cultural analysis.” It shows both the universal division of labour by sex across a wide range of human groups and the highly variable way specific tasks are assigned to either men or women.

**Currently industrial agriculture accounts for about 50% of habitable land use and 70% of water use globally. The efficient use of these critical resources one of the key features of biological systems of production.

the sleeper

Yesterday after another restless night I called my mother's sister hoping for a sympathetic ear. On hearing of my tribulations (of many of which, if you have been following, you will already know) she offered the following advice:

- I ought to accept any help offered;
- St Augustine declared the optimal state of the soul was "order" (meaning that I should declutter);
- only in God does the soul find rest. Only at rock bottom will God answer pleas for help. But I need to keep asking.

I am sure my aunt meant well. If she thought I was not feeling close to rock bottom I wonder why she thought I was speaking to her in this way. I don't feel terribly elevated, but prefer not to find out how much lower it is possible to go. Accepting help offered in the form of a handyman's contact number is the way the house got so damaged I can't use one of the rooms and am afraid it will let in vermin and fall down in the next wind storm. Cleanliness is next to godliness is a real thing for some. For others, the converse applies. For neuroatypical outcasts (see below) no relation obtains. Praying for help I do out loud, day and night, though I was not going to admit that. What did I expect: we have talked past one another my entire life.

One does desire a coherent narrative account of one's experience, and even if it be not the version projected by my aunt, I'd like to avoid the nihilistic and absurdist extreme as well. Of the possibilities, one which currently appeals is the notion of the sleeper. It is a form of evolutionary diversity argument, to wit: Though I may be wretched and failing by ordinary metrics, there may arise a situation in which I have what is needed, and then I can save the day, the society,... like the Countess of Gormenghast when the floods were raging. No, I do not normally indulge in heroic fantasies. It's a trope of some of the vaxx resistance which is presently in my interest to borrow.

Another level of being a sleeper manifested today. You without this energy dynamic may find it strange.
A year and a half ago, let's say, I was using a pair of deerskin gloves for gardening which were much softer and more comfortable than my usual riggers' gloves. One finger developed a tear. It vexes me to keep having to discard otherwise functional work gloves with a hole, more so in the case of these deerskin ones. So I cut a piece of scrap leather and prepared to glue it over the tear. The work sat in the kitchen with the glue, a rag and a matchstick. Activation evergy was unavailable.
Meanwhile, two pairs of leather bike boots began to come apart and were stashed in the back verandah. One pair which was next to the freezer necessitated regular balletic manoeuvres when moving food in and out.
Two days ago, I noticed how dusty they had become. (
As a rule, dust or disorder are invisible to one with certain neurological configurations. For instance, the house remains clean until someone is about to visit, when it maliciously transforms into an embarrassing pile of mess.) I put a cloth on top of the freezer to remind myself to clean them. Then, this afternoon, when I was getting a pizza to thaw for my dinner, everything abruptly reconfigured. Half an hour later all the work was done. The glue has been put away. I'll wear the Alpine Stars next time I go out on the bike.

Mesopotamian Gods for April/May

In the Standard Mesopotamian Calendar (Note 1), the month beginning at the new moon of April is Ayaru. From Astrolabe B (Note 2), “The month Ayaru, the Pleiades, the Seven Gods (Sibitti) (Note 3), the opening up of the ground; the oxen are yoked; the land becomes arable; the ploughs washed; the month of heroic Ningirsu, the great ensi (priest) of Enlil.” This is the month that “the horned oxen march forth” in the Gusisu Festival of Ninurta.

In the Old Babylonian Calendar, it was called Ezem Gusisu because of the Gusisu Festival. Since this is the month of spring storms, the land is prepared for sowing. The Gusisu Festival is held at the full moon for three days. Ningirsu, who is the Warrior God, becomes Ninurta, the Farmer God. The Son of Enlil (the Keeper of the Tablets of Destiny), Ninurta brings the rains of spring. Before the inundation of the fields in May/June, irrigation ditches are repaired and filled. In addition, the oxen and ploughs are prepared for the spring farrowing. This festival was held for three days with the entire pantheon of Gods receiving offerings. (Note 4)

To honor Ninurta as Lord Plough and Master of the Fields, “The Debate Between the Hoe and the Plough” is read. (Note 5) This debate highlights the Hoe’s importance in civilization, since it builds the cities. Meanwhile, the Plough provides grain for the cities. Afterwards, a plough is symbolically used with the dropping of the first seed to be planted.

Then, the “Song of the Ploughing Oxen” is sung. This song depicts spring ploughing as the “faithful farmer with oxen.” One stanza is:
“My king, I want to praise the leading oxen of the plough:
‘Ellu! go, oxen, go, put the neck under the yoke,
go, royal oxen, go, put the neck under the yoke!
Step on the furrows of the fertile field, that the sides be made straight.
With your lion’s tail beat the sides of the plough,
Your step, oxen, rejoices the people, you have been given strength to work!
The oxen you guide, Lipit-Istar (the king), and your song is a pleasure.” (Note 6)

At the end of the Gusisu Festival, the plough and oxen are blessed. Then, a final praise hymn is sung:
“The Hero has performed his divine function.
Ningal, the servant of Enlil, let go of the plough and removed the yoke.
From that place the Gods depart to perform their routine duties.
Ninurta stands by the Ekurzagin (Note 7), head raised high,
And calls forth to his Father, the Great Mountain Enlil:
‘My Father, the divine functions of the month Gusisu have been completed; seed has touched the earth.’”

Late in the month, the Sacred Marriage of Nabu and Tasmetu is celebrated. (Note 8) This Marriage of these Gods ensures the fertility and abundance of the land. During the Sacred Marriage of Nabu (God of Wisdom and Abundant Harvest) with Tasmetu (Goddess of Listening and Sexual Attraction), their statues are placed together. As a Divine Couple, They come together as Bride and Groom. After spending six days and seven nights together, the two Gods are served a banquet by the king and the people. From this marriage will come peace and prosperity to the land.

Notes:
Note 1. The Babylonians had a lunar calendar, and added months beyond the 12-month year. They kept their year keyed to the equinoxes. Between 1750 – 1500 BCE, the Babylonians standardized their calendar – the Standard Mesopotamian Calendar to unify their empire.

Note 2. Astrolabe B has 12-month sectors with the rising of the stars. It lists the main events in the Babylonian Wheel of the Year.

Note 3. The Seven Gods, who are associated with the Pleiades, can be called to fight evil demons. (They are usually referred to as a group, not as individuals.)

Note 4. The first day’s offerings go to Enlil, Ninlil, Ninurta, and the Chair of Enlil. The second day’s offerings go to Ninlil, Nanna, Ninurta, Nintinugga, Ninhursag, Nuska, Inanna, Enki, Nisaba, and Ningagia. Also, to the Sacred Mound, Door of Enlil, “Abzu” (Pool) of Ninlil, the Plough, the Threshing Sled, the Harp, and the Chariot. The third day’s offerings are for Ninurta and the Plough.

Note 5. The Sumerians wrote debates (disputations) as a part of their theology to explain the relations between the Gods and humans. Seven are known – Bird and Fish, Copper and Silver, Millstone and Gulgul-stone, Hoe and Plough, Date Palm and Tamarisk (Tree and Reed), Winter and Summer, and Sheep and Grain.

Note 6. From Mark Cohen, “Festivals and Calendars of the Ancient Near East.”

Note 7. The Ekurzagin is the “Mountain House of the Gods.”

Note 8. Tasmetu is first named as Nabu’s Consort. However, the Babylonians regarded Nanaya to be his Consort, while the Assyrians thought that Tasmetu was.

just get the shotsWe are now well into the fifth year of these open posts. When I first posted a tentative hypothesis on the course of the Covid phenomenon, I had no idea that discussion on the subject would still be necessary all these years later, much less that it would turn into so lively, complex, and troubling a conversation. It has been quite a wild ride, all things considered.

That said, comments on these open posts have been declining for some time now, and last week's post got well under 50 comments. Thus I think it's time to have a conversation about where to go from here. It may be that going to one post a month would do a better job of fostering conversation; it may be that these posts have served their purpose, all that needed to be said has been said, and it's time to move on to other things. I'll look forward to your ideas.

For the time being, though, it's time for another open post. The rules are the same as before:

1. If you plan on parroting the party line of the medical industry and its paid shills, please go away. This is a place for people to talk openly, honestly, and freely about their concerns that the party line in question is dangerously flawed and that actions being pushed by the medical industry and its government enablers are causing injury and death on a massive scale. It is not a place for you to dismiss those concerns. Anyone who wants to hear the official story and the arguments in favor of it can find those on hundreds of thousands of websites.

2. If you plan on insisting that the current situation is the result of a deliberate plot by some villainous group of people or other, please go away. There are tens of thousands of websites currently rehashing various conspiracy theories about the Covid-19 outbreak and the vaccines. This is not one of them. What we're exploring is the likelihood that what's going on is the product of the same arrogance, incompetence, and corruption that the medical industry and its wholly owned politicians have displayed so abundantly in recent decades. That possibility deserves a space of its own for discussion, and that's what we're doing here.

3. If you plan on using rent-a-troll derailing or disruption tactics, please go away. I'm quite familiar with the standard tactics used by troll farms to disrupt online forums, and am ready, willing, and able -- and in fact quite eager -- to ban people permanently for engaging in them here. Oh, and I also lurk on other Covid-19 vaccine skeptic blogs, so I'm likely to notice when the same posts are showing up on more than one venue.

4. If you plan on making off topic comments, please go away. This is an open post for discussion of the Covid epidemic, the vaccines, drugs, policies, and other measures that supposedly treat it, and other topics directly relevant to those things. It is not a place for general discussion of unrelated topics. Nor is it a place to ask for medical advice; giving such advice, unless you're a licensed health care provider, legally counts as practicing medicine without a license and is a crime in the US. Don't even go there.

5. If you don't believe in treating people with common courtesy, please go away. I have, and enforce, a strict courtesy policy on my blogs and online forums, and this is no exception. The sort of schoolyard bullying that takes place on so many other internet forums will get you deleted and banned here. Also, please don't drag in current quarrels about sex, race, religions, etc. No, I don't care if you disagree with that: my journal, my rules.

6. Please don't just post bare links without explanation. A sentence or two telling readers what's on the other side of the link is a reasonable courtesy, and if you don't include it, your attempted post will be deleted.

7. Please don't post LLM ("AI") generated text. This is a place for human beings to talk to other human beings, not for the regurgitation of machine-generated text. Also, please don't discuss large language models (the technology popularly and inaccurately called "artificial intelligence" these days) except as they bear directly on the Covid phenomenon. Here again, my finger is hovering over the delete button.

Please also note that nothing posted here should be construed as medical advice, which neither I nor the commentariat (excepting those who are licensed medical providers) are qualified to give. Please take your medical questions to the licensed professional provider of your choice.

With that said, the floor is open for discussion.

Edit 14 April 2026: The votes are in, and a very substantial number of regular commenters have asked that this forum continue on a once-a-month basis. I've therefore changed the title of the post, and a new one of these will be going up at or near the beginning of each month. I'm also willing to consider modest changes in the rules, though the basic rules outlined above will remain in place -- no shilling for Big Pharma, no AI slop, no rudeness, and so on.

I want to thank everyone who commented on how this forum helped them get through the Covid-driven era of cognitive collapse, btw. It did the same thing for me, for what it's worth -- knowing that there were other people out there who didn't either rent out their brains to Pfizer's marketing department, on the one hand, or start babbling about space lizards on the other, was very welcome.

Marcus brings the heatIt's a little past midnight and so it's time to launch a new Magic Monday.

***This Magic Monday is now closed and no further comments will be put through. See you next week!***

Roman Gods for April 21-30

PALES
On April 21, the Parilia is held. Similar to the Celtic Beltane Festival, the Parilia focuses on the purification of sheep and shepherds. Sheep pens would be cleaned out and garlands hung on the gates. Bonfires are lit and sheep are driven through them. Grain and milk are offered to Pales of Shepherds and Sheep. For this festival, I pray for healthy livestock and put a stuffed sheep between two candles.

Pales is a mystery as to what They are – male or female, plural or singular. This/these ancient Roman God/s are from the time before the Romans were shepherds, which adds to the confusion of who Pales is/are. I prefer to regard Pales as the entirety of all the concepts about Them. For me, They are the Protectors of Herders and Flocks. neptunesdolphins.wordpress.com/2017/04/21/god-of-the-month-pales/

In “Fasti,” Ovid writes of a ritual to Pales.
“Make dark smoke with pure burning sulphur,
And let the sheep bleat, in contact with the smoke.
Burn male-olive wood, and pine, and juniper fronds,
And let scorched laurel crackle in the hearth.
Let a basket of millet keep the millet cakes company:
The rural goddess particularly loves that food.
Add meats, and a pail of her milk, and when the meat
Is cut, offer the warm milk, pray to sylvan Pales,
Saying: ‘Protect the cattle and masters alike:
And drive everything harmful from my stalls.”

(The Parilia is also considered the Founding Day of Rome.)

VENUS ERYCINA
At the Vinalia Prior (the Festival of Wine from the Last Year), the wine from autumn is opened and offered to Venus Erycina and Jupiter. (This is the first tasting of the new wine.) Originally from Eryx in Sicily, Venus Erycina became Romanized and associated with fertility. During the Vinalia on April 23, prostitutes would offer mint and myrtle to Her, as the Goddess of Prostitutes.

ROBIGUS (ROBIGO)
To save crops from wheat rust, the Romans sacrificed dogs to Robigus, the God of Wheat Rust during the Robigalia on April 25. Traditionally, red animals were offered at the boundary of Roman territory to ensure protection of the crops from mildew and blight. Today, people offer red wine requesting that Robigus leave the crops alone. https://neptunesdolphins.wordpress.com/2018/04/22/god-of-the-month-robigus-robigo-of-wheat-rust/

In “Fasti,” Ovid presents a prayer for Robigus.
“Your priest, Quirinus, pronounced these words:
‘Scaly Mildew, spare the blades of corn,
And let their tender tips quiver above the soil.
Let the crops grow, nurtured by favourable stars,
Until they’re ready for the sickle.
Your power’s not slight: the corn you blight
The grieving farmer gives up for lost.
Wind and showers don’t harm the wheat as much,
Nor gleaming frost that bleaches the yellow corn,
As when the sun heats the moist stalks:
Then, dreadful goddess, is the time of your wrath.
Spare us, I pray, take your blighted hands from the harvest,
And don’t harm the crop: it’s enough that you can harm.”

FLORA
The Floralia, honoring Flora, the Goddess of Flowering Plants, is held from April 27 to May 1. (Fauna, the Goddess of Wildlife, is her Sister.) Coming after the Robigalia, the Floralia affirms the safety of the growing plants from harm. During this time, people adorn themselves and their homes with flowers. They also wear colorful clothing to reflect the emerging flowers. Traditionally, goats and rabbits were set loose in the crowds, while priests threw lupines, bean flowers and vetch about. This was to ensure fertility of everyone and everything. neptunesdolphins.wordpress.com/2018/04/26/flora-goddess-of-flowering-plants/
