N: Hi, I got your message, I guess we're going to just disagree. You know, the majority of people who don't want the vaccine are in [spoken in a low voice] dumbass Republican states...
temporaryreality: Well, it's a pity that my considered opinion has to be equated in your view with those you disparage...
N. That's not what I'm implying it's just that... well, I have to [pauses, then sallies forth with emphasis] *believe* that the government has our best interests at heart.
tr: huh. Well, there we differ. The novelty of the delivery mechanism and the lack of animal testing or knowledge of long-term effects, and the decision to remove the control group from the study indicate faulty science to me.
N: Well, I'm really taking it on faith that this is the right thing to do.
tr: Yes, I see that. And I recognize that my opinion about the quality of the science being practiced in this experiment will not prevent me from contracting a communicable disease. Nonetheless, I am not comfortable volunteering for something so understudied as this class of vaccines.

The scene: a local rodeo
The ritual: Hats removed, the able-bodied up on their feet, and all silently listening to a ten-minute* paean to "Old Glory" in which the rodeo announcer's voice swelled with emotion as scenes of battles and triumphs were invoked and the group was led to identify with the virtues of noble and brave action. This culminated in a local boy's singing of The Star Spangled Banner.
*ok, maybe it was only five minutes. It felt like ten, though.
